Piece Movements and Values

Understanding piece strength and mobility is essential for good play in Xiangqi.

General

The king. Moves one point orthogonally (horizontally or vertically) within the palace. Protecting the General is your highest priority.

Chariots (Most Valuable)

Move like rooks in Chess—any number of points horizontally or vertically. Chariots are the powerhouses of Xiangqi, critical for both attacking and defending.

Cannons (Unique to Xiangqi)

Move like Chariots but capture by jumping over an intervening piece (the 'screen'). This creates powerful tactical opportunities and discovered attacks not found in other games.

Horses

Move in an L-shape like Chess knights, but can be blocked by pieces adjacent to them. This makes them less powerful and more predictable than in Chess.

Advisors

Move one point diagonally within the palace only. Serve as the General's personal guards and help defend against threats.

Elephants

Move exactly two points diagonally and cannot cross the river. Weak defensive pieces used to control key squares on your side of the board.

Soldiers

Move forward one point before crossing the river. After crossing, they can move sideways too, becoming significantly more powerful in the opponent's territory.

Opening Principles

Start strong by following these fundamental principles in the opening phase.

1. Control the Center Files

The e, f, and g files are crucial. Command these central files to restrict your opponent's mobility and create attacking opportunities.

2. Develop Chariots and Cannons Early

These are your strongest pieces. Get them into play quickly from their starting positions to build pressure and control key squares.

3. Protect Your Palace

Keep your General safe by maintaining defensive pieces in and around the palace while preparing to launch your own attacks.

4. Seize the Initiative

Xiangqi rewards aggressive play. Look for attacking chances early and often. Passive positions lead to defeat quickly.

Tactical Patterns to Master

Master these common tactics to dramatically improve your game.

Cannon Screens

Position a piece in front of your Cannon to create a capture threat. The enemy can't safely block because the Cannon can capture by jumping over the screen.

Chariot Attacks on Open Files

Rooks (Chariots) are strongest on clear ranks and files. Actively open lines by trading pieces to maximize your Chariots' power.

Back-Rank Threats

Your General's back rank is highly vulnerable. Always defend it with active Chariots or Cannons to prevent sneak attacks.

Double Attacks

Combine your pieces to attack multiple targets simultaneously. Cannons and Chariots excel at creating double threats that are difficult to defend.

Key Differences from Western Chess

Understanding these fundamental differences will help you adapt from Chess to Xiangqi.

The River and Palace

The central river restricts piece movement (Elephants can't cross). The palace confines your General and Advisors. These create a very different defensive structure than Chess.

Cannons Are Unique

No piece in Chess works like Cannons. Learning to use them effectively and defend against them is crucial to mastering Xiangqi.

Early Tactical Focus

Xiangqi games often feature combat starting from move 1. Passive openings lead to problems much faster than in Chess.

Tempo Is Critical

Losing the initiative in Xiangqi is severely punished. Maintaining tempo and aggression throughout the game is essential.
