Best Friend Quiz in a minute

Best Friend Quiz is a game about how well your friends really know you. One person answers a question about themselves in secret, everyone else guesses what they said, and then all the answers come out together. It suits close friends, cousins, classmates and family dinners alike, and someone usually learns something new.

How to play Best Friend Quiz

You need three or more people, paper and pens, and a list of questions about likes, habits and memories. Everyone takes a turn in the spotlight.

  1. Choose who is in the spotlight. One player is the subject for the round.
  2. Read the question. Someone reads a question about the subject, such as "What would they order at a café?"
  3. Everyone writes an answer. The subject writes their real answer. Everyone else writes what they think the subject put.
  4. Reveal and compare. The subject reads their answer, then the guessers show theirs.
  5. Score the matches. Each guesser who matches the subject's answer scores a point. Agree before you start how close is close enough.
  6. Move the spotlight. The next player becomes the subject. When everyone has had a turn, the highest score wins.

Playing Best Friend Quiz online

In the online room, one player is featured each round. They type their real answer to the question, and everyone else types a guess at what they said. Nobody sees anyone else's answer until the reveal, which shows the featured answer next to every guess.

Each matching guess scores a point. The room compares answers word for word, ignoring capital letters and punctuation, so "Pizza!" matches "pizza" but "cheese pizza" does not. Short answers work best. The featured player doesn't score that round, since their job is to answer honestly. Each round has a 90-second timer.

Rooms take 2 to 8 players (best with three or more), and a match lasts 3, 5 or 8 rounds with the spotlight moving to a new player each time. Questions come in Favourites, Lifestyle and Memories & Dreams sets, or a mix. Played together, argue about the near misses out loud. Apart, turn on the built-in video call or keep FaceTime or Zoom running and share the room link.

Tips and house rules

  • Keep answers to a word or two, especially online, where only matching answers score.
  • As the subject, answer with your first honest thought. Overthinking leads to answers nobody could guess.
  • Mix easy questions with harder ones so newer friends still get a chance to score.
  • In person, some groups give half a point for a guess that is close but not exact.
  • For families, ask about food, school, holidays and favourite films.
  • In a big group, guess in pairs, with each pair agreeing on one answer.

Best Friend Quiz FAQ

How do you play Best Friend Quiz?

One player answers a question about themselves in secret. Everyone else guesses what they said. Matching guesses score a point, then the spotlight moves to the next player.

How many people do you need?

Three or more works best, so there are at least two guessers each round. The online room takes 2 to 8 players.

What questions should you ask in a best friend quiz?

Questions with short answers work best: favourite foods, colours and films, small daily habits, dream trips and childhood memories. Leave out anything someone might not want to share.

Does a close answer count?

In person, house rules vary. Online, only a match counts once capitals and punctuation are ignored, so "cat" and "cats" are different answers.

Can you play Best Friend Quiz on Zoom or FaceTime?

Yes. Keep your call running and share the room link, or use the video call built into the room. Everyone types on their own phone, so nobody can peek.

Is it free to play Best Friend Quiz online?

Yes. The room is free in any browser, with no app to download and no account to create.
