5 Second Challenge in a minute

5 Second Challenge, often called the 5 Second Rule, is a race against a very short clock. You hear a topic such as "things with wheels" and have five seconds to name three. It sounds easy until the countdown starts and your mind goes blank. The fun is in the panicked answers people blurt out under pressure.

How to play 5 Second Challenge

You need two or more players, a list of topics and a timer. A phone stopwatch works, or one player can count down from five out loud. Sit in a circle so turns pass in order.

  1. Read a topic to the player on the spot. The player to their left usually reads it, so the person answering hears it fresh.
  2. Start the five seconds. The clock starts the moment the topic has been read.
  3. Name three things out loud. All three answers must fit the topic and be said before time runs out.
  4. The group decides. If the others agree all three answers count, the player scores a point. A wrong answer or a slow finish scores nothing.
  5. Pass the turn on. The next player gets a new topic. House rules vary. In some versions a player who fails passes the same topic along and the next person must name three different things.

Playing 5 Second Challenge online

Online, the room deals the topic, runs the five-second countdown and keeps score, so nobody has to hold a stopwatch. Each round one player is on the spot, and the turn moves to the next player in the room after every round. The player on the spot says their three answers out loud. They can tap Done! to stop the clock early, or New topic to swap a topic they do not like without losing the turn.

When the time is up, the host listens to the group and taps Nailed it or Missed. Nailing it is worth a point, and the highest score at the end wins. Rooms take 2 to 8 players, a match lasts 4, 6 or 8 rounds, and topics come from everyday life, food and drink, a silly pack or a mix of all three. The room does not listen to your answers, so the group is always the judge.

In the same room, just say your answers out loud. Apart, everyone needs to hear the player on the spot, so turn on the built-in video call or keep your FaceTime or Zoom call running and share the room link.

Tips and house rules

  • Say the first three things that pop into your head. Hunting for clever answers burns the clock.
  • Agree before the first round how strict to be. Some groups accept any honest attempt, others want three clear answers.
  • Give younger players ten seconds, or ask them for two things instead of three.
  • Ban repeats within a game, so nobody can answer "apple, banana, orange" to every food topic.
  • On a video call, speak up and face the camera so the judges can hear all three answers.
  • Write your own topics about your family, school or favourite shows for a round nobody can prepare for.

5 Second Challenge FAQ

How do you play the 5 Second Challenge?

One player hears a topic and has five seconds to name three things that fit it. If the group agrees they made it, they score a point. Then the next player takes a turn with a new topic.

How many players do you need?

Two is enough, one to answer and one to judge. The online room takes up to 8 players, and bigger groups at a table can play in teams.

Is the 5 Second Challenge good for kids?

Yes. The topics in the online room are everyday and silly ones that suit all ages. For young children, many families allow extra time or ask for two answers.

Who decides if the answers count?

The group does. At a table, everyone votes. Online, the host taps Nailed it or Missed after hearing the answers, since the room does not listen to what you say.

Can you play 5 Second Challenge on Zoom or FaceTime?

Yes. Share the room link on your call, or use the video call built into the room. The countdown appears on every screen at once.

Is it free to play 5 Second Challenge online?

Yes. The room is free in any browser, with no app to download and no account to create.
