Spin the Bottle in a minute

Spin the Bottle is a game of chance for a circle of friends. One player spins a bottle in the middle, and whoever it points to when it stops gets a prompt. In the family version played here, that means a quick truth, like naming your favourite snack, or a silly dare, like waddling like a penguin. It takes seconds to learn, and everyone watches the bottle slow down.

How to play Spin the Bottle

You need at least three people sitting in a circle on the floor or around a table, plus an empty plastic bottle. Write a stack of kind truths and silly dares on slips of paper before you start, so nobody has to invent one on the spot.

  1. Lay the bottle in the middle. Everyone should be about the same distance from it so each player has a fair chance.
  2. Spin it. The first player spins the bottle hard enough for it to turn a few times.
  3. See who it points to. The player the neck stops at is chosen. If it lands on the spinner or right between two people, spin again.
  4. Do the prompt. The chosen player draws a slip and answers the truth or does the dare. Anyone can pass on a prompt they are not comfortable with.
  5. The chosen player spins next. Play until everyone has had a few turns. House rules vary, and some groups let the spinner choose truth or dare for the chosen player.

Playing Spin the Bottle online

Online, the bottle lives on everyone's screen. The spinner taps Spin and the room picks a player at random from everyone except the spinner, so the bottle can never land on the person who spun it. The animation is for show. The choice is made before the bottle starts turning, so nobody can nudge it.

The chosen player gets a prompt from Silly Dares, Quick Truths or a mix of both, and then takes the next spin, as in the classic game. The spinner or the host moves the room on when the prompt is done. A match lasts 4, 6 or 8 spins for 2 to 8 players, and the player chosen most often is crowned most popular at the end.

Sitting together, everyone can watch the dares live. Apart, the dares are much funnier when people can see them, so turn on the room's video call or keep your FaceTime or Zoom call running and share the room link.

Tips and house rules

  • Agree before you start that anyone can pass on a prompt, no questions asked. People join in more when they know they can.
  • Keep dares short and doable where you are sitting. Ten seconds of penguin walking beats anything that needs props.
  • Use a plastic bottle on a smooth floor. Glass can break, and carpet stops a spin dead.
  • For younger children, stick to silly dares. Funny voices and animal impressions always land.
  • If the bottle keeps choosing the same person, let them nominate who goes next instead.
  • In a big group, play in two circles, or let the chosen player pick a partner to do the dare with them.
