Truth or Dare in a minute

Truth or Dare is the turn-taking party game where each player chooses between answering a question honestly and doing a playful challenge. It has been played at sleepovers and parties for generations. A good game is all about laughing together, and the best dares are the silly ones.

How to play Truth or Dare

You need at least two people, and it is livelier with four or more. Sit in a circle and agree on any off-limits topics before the first turn.

  1. Choose who goes first. Pick the youngest, roll a dice or spin a bottle. Play then moves around the circle.
  2. Ask "Truth or dare?". The player beside them, or the whole group, asks the question. The player picks one.
  3. Answer the truth honestly. If they pick truth, someone asks them a question and they answer it truthfully.
  4. Or do the dare. If they pick dare, someone sets a safe, quick challenge, like singing a nursery rhyme in a robot voice, and they do it.
  5. Pass the turn. The next player in the circle takes a turn. Play until everyone has had a few goes or the group wants to stop. There is usually no score.

Passing and switching

  • Many groups give each player one or two passes for the whole game.
  • Some let a player who refuses a truth switch to a dare instead, or the other way round.
  • A common house rule is that you cannot pick truth more than twice in a row.
  • House rules vary, so decide these before you start.

Playing Truth or Dare online

Online, nobody has to think up a question on the spot. On your turn you tap Truth or Dare, and the room draws a prompt from its built-in deck for everyone to see. Different one swaps it for another of the same kind. When you are finished, tap Answered for a truth or Did it for a dare, or tap Pass to let it go. Dares run on a 60-second countdown, and a dare still going when time runs out counts as a pass. Truths have no timer.

Rooms take 2 to 8 players, and turns rotate in seat order. The host picks 4, 6 or 8 turns and a category of Friends, Funny, Family or Bold, or a mix of all four. The host can skip a stuck turn. There is no score, and the end of the match shows who did what.

If you are in the same room, do the dares where everyone can see. If you are apart, turn on the built-in video call so the group can watch, or keep your usual FaceTime or Zoom call running and share the room link.

Tips and house rules

  • Agree on limits first. Anyone can pass without having to explain why.
  • Keep dares quick and safe, and do them where the group can see. Nothing that could break, hurt or embarrass anyone.
  • Ask truths you would be happy to answer yourself.
  • For younger players, use the Family category online, or stick to dares like doing an animal impression or telling a joke.
  • In a big group, choose 8 turns online so more people get a go, or play a second match.
  • Over a video call, pick dares that work on camera, like making a funny face or showing something from your room.
