Put a Finger Down in a minute

Put a Finger Down is the game where everyone starts with ten fingers up and lowers one each time a statement is true for them. "Put a finger down if you have ever missed a bus" is a typical one. It took off as a video trend and works just as well around a table. At the end you compare hands and find out what the group has in common.

How to play Put a Finger Down

You can play with two people or a whole room. One person reads the statements, or you take turns reading them.

  1. Hold up ten fingers. Everyone, including the reader, starts with both hands up.
  2. Read a statement. The reader says "Put a finger down if…" and finishes it, for example "…you have ever laughed so hard you cried".
  3. Lower a finger if it is true. Anyone it applies to puts one finger down. Be honest. If it is not true for you, keep your fingers up.
  4. Keep going. Read the next statement. Players with no fingers left keep listening and cheering on the others.
  5. Compare at the end. After the last statement, everyone shows how many fingers they have left. House rules vary on what that means. Some groups name the person with the fewest fingers up as the one with the most stories, and others just enjoy the comparison.

Playing Put a Finger Down online

Online, the room keeps count of everyone's fingers for you. Every player starts with ten. Each statement appears on every phone, and you tap ME if it is true for you or NOT ME if it is not. Your answer locks with one tap and stays private until everyone has answered or the 90-second timer runs out. Then all the answers reveal together and the fingers drop at the same time.

Rooms take 2 to 8 players. The host picks 5, 10 or 15 prompts and a category of Everyday, Habits, Adventures or Silly, or a mix of all four, then taps Next Prompt to move on. The match plays every prompt even if someone reaches zero, and there is no winner, just the moments you shared. After each reveal, players can leave a short voice reaction.

If you are in the same room, hold up your real hands too and react out loud. If you are apart, turn on the built-in video call, or keep your usual FaceTime or Zoom call running and share the room link.

Tips and house rules

  • Mix easy statements with rarer ones so fingers do not all drop in the first few rounds.
  • After each statement, ask one person who put a finger down to tell the quick version of the story.
  • Let everyone write one statement about something they have done. Guessing whose it was makes a fun bonus round.
  • For younger players, keep to habits and everyday moments like losing a tooth or forgetting homework.
  • With a big group, play ten statements and then reset everyone to ten fingers for a new round.
  • Keep it kind. Statements should be things people are happy to admit, never something that puts one person on the spot.
